Hey parents of future LBUSD students! Are you a little lost trying to figure out this whole school enrollment thing? Been there!
A great first stop would be the upcoming Education Celebration. Here you can check out all the local elementary and middle schools in our area, talk to principals and teachers, and learn so much about public school in Long Beach.
Another great resource are the upcoming Kindergarten festivals. These are amazing events to learn the process of enrolling in TK or Kindergarten, and they're a great place to bring your kids to see if they are ready for the classroom setting.
Can't make it to the celebration or the festivals? Not to worry! You can find some helpful dates below.
Once enrollment opens, your first stop will be your home school. Just walk in or call, and the office will help you from there. Most schools will have you come in and send you home with a pack of instructions for setting up your online enrollment account, but check with your home school for specific instructions. If you don't know your home school, you can search by your home address on the LBUSD website.
After you have enrolled at your home school, you can then sign up for an online account. You will use this account to apply for school of choice, if you wish. You will be able to apply to 10 schools for school of choice, and I suggest using all your spots, to up your chance of getting a school of your choosing.
For ETK students: your enrollment will be a little different. Instead of registering through the traditional method, you will visit your school site first, to be sure you have all the required information. Then you will go online, starting on February 24th, and fill out an ETK intention form. The district will then call you within 5 days to let you know the status of your enrollment. Find the form and more information here: https://www.lbschools.net/Departments/Elementary_Schools/ETK.cfm

Kindergarten Eligibility:
So what is TK?? It's basically a practice year of Kindergarten. Your child will be in a public school classroom, practicing all the state standards, just like the Kinders. However, it will just be a little more easy going. Since both my kids went through TK, I get asked a lot about whether I think it's worth it. Although every child is different, we found the TK experience to be extremely valuable, and would recommend it to anyone entering the public school system. Having a free year of public school to get used to the changes before beginning the rigorous Kindergarten year seems to have given both my boys the skills they needed to breeze through the following years.
Is your child heading to TK or ETK? There have been several changes to the schools offering TK over the past couple years, so be sure to check the new map:
I know that's a lot, but you got this! Still have questions? Visit the LBUSD website, where you can find lots more information.
